Day 10: Friday 10/31/08
AM. I went 40 minutes easy at Brighton (9,000 ft) on the mile long loop that goes around the lake.
PM. I went 30 minutes easy at Brighton again then we all jumped in the car and rode 5min down the road to a hill in some camp grounds to do 8x 300m hills with a jog down rest and 3 minute break. “The hill was a rough estimate in distance which we decided was more like 280 ft” We then did a mile cool down. We were still around 7,700 feet and I couldn’t believe how bad I was hurting at the top of the hills. I Just couldn’t get my breath even with the full rest of 3 minutes. My splits were: 47, 46, 44, 42, 41, 41, 42, 41.

Dumb Quotes: only a few of the 100′s
Friday, October 31st, 2008
Brian “I’ll pay you 400 dollars to run back from here” We were a good 40 miles away from home, it was pitch black out and the last 17 miles gain 3000 feet in elevation.
Dan “How much would you pay me if I could run to the top of that mountain and back in under an hour”
Dan and John “We are getting more benefit from the altitude because we are on the top bunk of the bunk beds” Their room has two bunk beds in it and they both chose to sleep on the top.
Dan “Do either of you guys just day dream about killing Brian” He was talking to John and I and Brian was standing right there.

Day 9: Thursday 10/30/08
AM. We drove to Park City today so we could do our morning run on the Rail Trail. I chose to do the low end of our choices, which was only 8 miles. I am still feeling a little tired and sore.
PM. We decided to drive straight from Park City to Ogden for our second session so that we didn’t have to go back up and then back down. Our original plan was to see a movie between our workouts but we ended up not having enough time. We got to the track two and a half hours early so we just parked the hummer and took a nap. About 30min into my peaceful nap “ I was laying with my legs dangling out the back of the hummer enjoying the 70 degree weather” I hear the guys screaming with excitement. I got up too find the guys have invented a game of throwing rocks at 4 different trash barrels. Yes, timing was involved… The object was to hit each Barrel by picking up one rock at a time and then sprinting across a black line once each barrel had been hit. Needless to say this game was played for over an hour and Dan left with the World Record time of 10.3 seconds. Don’t worry we had two watches going at all times. So after the game we did our lifting and core routine and then got massages. It was a long day and we didn’t get back to our house until 9:30.

Day 8: Wednesday 10/29/08
AM. 10 miles easy in Salt Lake City which is 5,000 feet. Today I felt sore and tired so I tried to take it easy.
PM. 1.5 miles warm up, 3x 4x 200m with a 200m jog and a 4min break. 1 mile cool down. It was hard getting warmed up today but once I got loose the 200’s didn’t feel that bad. John did the 200’s with me and my splits were: 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 29, 30, 29, 29, 28. Long day!

Day 7: Tuesday 10/28/08

Day 7: Tuesday 10/28/08.
Today we drove to Ogden to meet up with some of the guys at Weber State. We did 3 miles warm up, 4 miles tempo and then 3 miles cool down at 5,000 feet. I went out too hard and really paid for it. Seth, who just graduated from Weber State was doing his run at 5:00 to 5:05 pace and I just couldn’t resist the bait. I guess I had to learn the lesson the hard way, which seems to be the way I do things. My splits were 4:59, 5:05, 5:18, 5:18. Once I couldn’t breath it was all over. Today was a good learning experience for my first ever hard run at altitude.

Life as I know it
Monday, October 27th, 2008
PM. 5mi easy at 9,000 feet. We just did loops around a lake. It might get boring after a while but it is nice flat running which makes it easier to have decent turn over. After we got back we went to the gym and did our core and neuro work.
Day 4.
Today we went down to Park City to hit up the rail trail again for a single long run. We ended up doing 76 min and the last 3 mi Brian decided to pick it up… needless to say we all spread out. I hit my last 3mi at 5:30 pace and it wasn’t fun.
On the ride back to the house we noticed a mountain in the distance…. It wasn’t long before we were all making ridiculus claims as to how long it would take to get to the top from our house. With the crunch of getting back in time for the OSU game we decided to set out. Brian was going to prove his manliness by getting to the top of that mountain and back as fast as he could. We were all shocked to find out Brian is kind of mountain goatish.. he made it to the top in an hour thirty minutes. The rest of us took our time and enjoyed the views. It was a fun hike and we learned a little about Brian aka..“goat boy” along the way.
We made it back just in time to get in the hot tub for 15 min and then watch the game.
Day 5.
AM. 35min easy at 9,000 feet. I felt good.
PM. 40min easy at 9,000 feet and 8x 30 second strides.
Day 6.
70min easy on a trail that went on the hill sides around Park City. I was either tired today or the trail wasn’t that easy… maybe both. A hand glider landed out of nowhere right as we were finishing our run. Dan didn’t see him and for a second I thought they were going to collide. It was 69 degrees outside so after our run we stretched and relaxed in the grass field for about 40min. Tomorrow is a threshold and I know it is going to be hard.
PM. Neuro and core in the gym.

Life as i know it..

Day 1. 7 mi easy. 57min around the mountain bike trails and ski trails of Solitude. First 10 minutes was straight up hill and almost killed me but after that it was a great run. Our run was between 8,000 and 8,700 feet.
Day 2.
AM. 5mi easy. Trying to find good trails to run and ended up going down a long dirt road and then had to come back up… big mistake. Brian and John actually stopped and walked for 2minutes. Our run was between 8,500 and 9,600 feet.
PM. 6mi easy. We went down to Park City and ran on an old rail system. We were able to run just under 7min pace the whole way and it felt about like 6:30 pace. I didn’t feel bad at all. Our run was at 6,700 feet.
Day 3.
AM. 5mi easy. We were trying to find some trail just up the road at Brighten ski resort. I would consider it a failure. To much steep running and the footing wasn’t that great. The search continues. However… it was beautiful out.
Everyone is adjusting to the altitude well, some of the guys have had an occasional headache but that’s about it. So far I haven’t had any problems. I will say that I really seem to struggle for the first 10min of our runs and then I feel great. Maybe cause it seems we always have to start straight up hill. On our fist run I thought I was going to have a heart attack and the guys were joking that we needed to bring a defibrillator along for me. I typically struggle for the first 10min of runs at sea level before my body wakes up so I think it is just magnified at altitude. Yesterday my lips were purplish blue and we were thinking maybe I’m taking to much iron.. or maybe they just aren’t getting enough oxygen. What ever the cause they look normal today so that’s a relief.
Well we are gonna practice again soon so I’m off to take a short nap aka…. Snap.

Altitude Training
Sunday, October 26th, 2008
My last breath of oxygen thick air, and then I arrived in Utah. We were picked up in a hummer by the cleaning lady who was very nice and chatty. It was about a 30 min ride to the house located in the ski resort of Solitude. The drive up took us from around 5,000 feet to 8,000 feet through curvy roads with the occasional cliff that you don’t want to drive off. The view was beautiful however we were informed that we had just missed the red orange blaze that the aspens give off while the leaves are turning. Some of the ski resorts are starting to make snow so you can kind of feel the excitement around you. When we drove up to the house we are all shocked to see its beauty. We can walk 200m to the ski lifts from our front door. Yet the most exciting part thus far is trying to get the hummer in to the garage. As we approach I say to myself there is no way that is going to fit.. It does… barely. The house is beautiful inside and fully furnished with flat screen TVs in every room. We were all wide eyed with our mouths hanging open as we looked around. I feel more like Drago than Rocky at this point but I’m not going to complain.. We are staying in the lap of luxury. Everything we could want is right here already.

Gone Runn’n!
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008
Well, off to Park City, Utah for a month of altitude training and some fun! I’ve been looking forward to this as it will be a chance to see how I handle altitude training. We stopped off first at the University of Indiana to get some testing done before we go and then plan to get tested on our way home to see if there were any effects. I’m traveling with Dan Huling, and Brian Olinger.
